Hofstra University School of Law Names Nora Demleitner as Dean

First Woman to Head Hofstra Law School

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Today Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz announced that Nora Demleitner, a distinguished faculty member who has served as Interim Dean of the Hofstra University School of Law since March, has been named dean of the Hofstra University School of Law, effective January 1, 2008. 

Dean Demleitner was selected by President Rabinowitz after a comprehensive and competitive national search by a committee of faculty, administrators and trustees.  She will be the first woman to serve as dean of Hofstra Law School.  "I am pleased that Nora Demleitner, who is both a distinguished legal scholar and a superb academic administrator, will lead Hofstra Law School into a new era of academic excellence," said President Rabinowitz.
 
Dean Demleitner, who has been a finalist in the law school dean searches at several other universities, said of her appointment, "I am very excited to have the opportunity to lead Hofstra Law School and help enhance its name and reputation in the legal community."
 
Dean Demleitner received her J.D. from Yale Law School, her B.A. from Bates College, and also holds an LL.M. with distinction in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown University Law Center. After law school Dean Demleitner clerked for the Hon. Samuel A. Alito, Jr., then a member of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. She testified in front of the U.S. Senate on behalf of Justice Alito's nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court.
 
Dean Demleitner teaches and has written widely in the areas of criminal, comparative and immigration law. Her special expertise is in sentencing and collateral sentencing consequences. Dean Demleitner is a managing editor of the Federal Sentencing Reporter and serves on the executive editorial board of the American Journal of Comparative Law. She is the lead author of

Sentencing Law and Policy, a major casebook on sentencing law, published by Aspen Law & Business. Her articles have appeared in the Stanford, Michigan, and Minnesota law reviews, among others. Dean Demleitner lectures widely in the United States and Europe.  She has also been a visiting researcher at the Max-Planck-Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Germany, funded by a German Academic Exchange Service grant. 
 
Hofstra Law School was founded in 1970 and is accredited by the ABA, boasting an alumni body of approximately 8,000 graduates. The school is located on the campus of Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. In addition to its full-time juris doctor (J.D.) degree program, Hofstra Law School offers part-time day and evening J.D. programs as well as graduate degree programs, including an LL.M. Program in American Legal Studies (for foreign law graduates), an LL.M. Program in International Law (for foreign or U.S. law graduates), and an LL.M. Program in Family Law.
