Students Who Transfer to Hofstra This Fall to Benefit From More Flexible Credit Policy

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY -- Hofstra University is welcoming transfer students with a new policy that allows them to use more credits earned from other institutions to satisfy Hofstra's distribution, or core curriculum, requirement. The change, designed to make the transition to Hofstra smoother, means transfer students can focus on their major courses sooner.

"Your credits now go further at Hofstra," said Herman Berliner, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. "We have maximized the ability to use your transfer credits to meet Hofstra degree requirements. More than ever, we are making the transfer experience as seamless as possible."

The University recognizes that transfer students, after finishing a year or two at another institution, are eager to focus on a major at Hofstra. To make this transition easier, Hofstra gives new transfer students greater flexibility in fulfilling their general education requirements - known as Hofstra's "Distribution" - with coursework from their prior institution. For example, any transfer science class worth three or more credits will fulfill the "Natural Science" distribution category, and any transfer psychology class worth three or more credits will fulfill the "Behavior Social Science" distribution category.  So, it's possible for a transfer student with one or more years of transfer credit to fulfill most or all general education distribution requirements before starting their first semester at Hofstra.

About Transferring to Hofstra
Each year Hofstra enrolls almost 1,000 new transfers from across the country and around the world. Candidates for fall and spring admission may complete a paper application, the Common Application, or apply with online. Transfer candidates are considered on a rolling basis, but early application is encouraged for students interested in on-campus housing and scholarships.

Qualified applicants may be eligible to receive a transfer scholarship of up to $15,000 per year. In addition, if you are a member of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and have earned at least 58 credits with a 3.5 GPA, you may be eligible for an additional $2,500 per year.
