Hofstra Welcomes Senior UK Political Advisor
Lord Wood of Anfield Named 2012 Presidential Scholar
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz announced today that Lord Wood, advisor to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Labour Party leader Ed Milliband, will be the Spring 2012 Visiting Presidential Scholar. The Presidential Scholar program exposes students to fresh perspectives in a variety of disciplines by bringing visiting scholars to campus for a series of public lectures and guest teaching engagements. The lecture series for the Spring 2012 semester will feature Lord Wood among other prestigious individuals.
Lord Stewart Wood is an Oxford professor who has recently been appointed to the House of Lords. He joins a prestigious group of visiting scholars including Chester Hartman, Director of Research for the Poverty & Race Research Action Council, and Anson Rabinbach, professor of history at Princeton University and a specialist in modern European history, among many other. The University as a whole is excited for the opportunities that Lord Wood of Anfield can offer the student body and surrounding community.
After receiving his doctoral degree from Harvard University in 1997, Lord Wood began his lectureship at Magdalen College, Oxford University. Beyond his strong ties to higher education, he has found great success in his political career as a founding member of Nexus, a non-partisan body linking British political insiders with academic schools of thought. As a result he has served as Senior Policy Advisor to Prime Minister Brown and campaign manager for the successful campaign of Ed Milliband to Labour Party Leader. His leadership and political strength led him to be Special Advisor overseeing culture, media, and sports in Britain and creating a strong relationship with President Barack Obama shortly before he was elected into office.
Lord Stewart Wood will be speaking at the following events:
Tuesday, April 17, 2012 "Is Britian Becoming America?" - Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, South Campus
Thursday, April 19, 2012 "Change in the White House? Comparing George W. Bush and Barack Obama Presidencies" - Student Center Theater, Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus
