Who:     4th-8th grade students  from 103 schools in Nassau and Suffolk Counties – see full listing below
Hofstra University’s Dr. Carole Clark Papper, a noted professor of writing studies and composition, will serve as head judge and moderator of the event.

What:    Hofstra Long Island Regional Spelling Bee. The winner of the Bee will go on to represent the region at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., later this spring.

When:  Sunday, February 24, 2013. (The Spelling Bee was originally scheduled for February 10 and had to be rescheduled because of Snowstorm "Nemo.")

Schedule for the day is as follows –

  • 10-11:30 a.m., Registration
  • 10:30-11:45 a.m., Written exam (students will take the test in small groups, on a rolling basis as they arrive)
  • Noon, Preliminary oral round
  • 1-2 p.m., Break
  • 2 p.m., Finalists announced – test scores for the written exam and the preliminary oral round will be added together. The number of finalists are expected to be between 35-50 children.
  • 2:15 p.m., The traditional spelling bee “spelldown” will begin and will continue until there is a winner.

Where: Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus.  Directions below.

How:    This is a ticketed event, not open to the general public.

Media:     Participating students have had a media release form signed by their parents on file.

Once the Spelling Bee has started, all media will be stationed in the front row balcony
where a mult box will be available. No flash photography will be permitted as it could distract participants during the competition.

Directions to the John Cranford Adams Playhouse:
Meadowbrook Parkway to Exit M4 (Coliseum, Hempstead Turnpike, Rte. 24 West). Once on Hempstead Turnpike,  make a U-turn at the fourth traffic light - just before going under the third Unispan (pedestrian bridge). After making U-Turn, drive approximately 70 feet and make the first right onto the South Campus.  Go past 2 stop signs.  The building around the corner on the left is the John Cranford Adams Playhouse.

More information is available at http://spellingbee.com.

In the event of inclement weather please call the weather hotline (516) 463-SNOW or visit www.hofstra.edu regarding the status of the competition.
