Concert on the Quad
First D'Addario Community Music Appreciation Concert, May 5
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … The D’Addario Community Music Appreciation Initiative and the Hofstra University Music Department will present a free outdoor community concert on Saturday, May 5, from 12:30-4 p.m. on Hofstra’s South Campus. Admission is free. For more information call the Hofstra Music Department at 516-463-5490.
Professor David Lalama directs the Hofstra Jazz Ensemble in an outdoor performance.
The concert will feature an eclectic mix of jazz, classical music and new compositions by Hofstra students and alumni. Participating groups include the Hofstra Jazz Ensemble, directed by David Lalama; The Hofstra String Quintet, directed by Alexander Sharpe; and the Hofstra Alumni Nonet, directed by Gary Henderson.
In addition the Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Band and Vocal Jazz Ensemble of the Nassau Suffolk Performing Arts is scheduled to perform. The Nassau Suffolk Performing Arts is a non-profit organization that provides talented student musicians from across Long Island and the metropolitan area with performance and rehearsal opportunities.
This first annual D’Addario Community Music Appreciation Concert is scheduled the day before Hofstra’s annual Dutch Festival, and the south campus will be blooming with thousands of flowers.
The D’Addario Community Music Appreciation Initiative is a multi-faceted program designed to increase knowledge and appreciation for all types of music among a broad range of young people. The initiative addresses several needs at Hofstra and in the local community, including to promote music appreciation, showcase the Hofstra Music Department and to allow Hofstra’s Music Ensembles to visit and perform in local schools and inspire children.
