Hofstra Professor of Media Studies Honored for Teaching Excellence

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY -- Susan J. Drucker, professor of journalism, media studies and public relations at Hofstra University, was awarded the 2012 Donald H. Ecroyd & Caroline Drummond Ecroyd Teaching Excellence Award from the Eastern Communication Association (ECA). The prize was presented at the association’s annual convention recently in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

According to the ECA, the Ecroyd Award is given for “a demonstrated record of employing communication principles as the foundation for constructing pedagogical principles applied in teaching practices." Criteria for the award include evidence of teaching competency and effectiveness as well as five letters of support from colleagues and former students. The ECA, an organization of scholars, teachers and students of communication studies, was established in 1910 and is the oldest professional communication association in the United States.

Professor Drucker is an attorney, teaches courses in media law and media ethics, and coordinates the media studies program in the Department of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations in Hofstra’s School of Communication. She is also treasurer of the Urban Communication Foundation, and a past president of the ECA.

As an author and editor, she has written or co-written over 100 articles and book chapters as well as 10 books, including Global Media Heroes, Urban Communication Reader, and two editions of Real Law@Virtual Space: The Regulation of Cyberspace. Her most recent book, Regulating Social Media: Law and Ethics, will be published later this year. Professor Drucker is also a frequent lecturer in Europe and Asia, and has conducted collaborative research in comparative communication systems. Her latest work is a documentary film entitled: "Memories in Cypriot Soil: The British Detention of Jews in Cyprus from 1946-1949.”
