Ed Ingles of WRHU Radio Hofstra Wins Lifetime Achievement Award

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY -- Hofstra School of Communication Professional-in-Residence Ed Ingles has been awarded the John Holliman Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award from his alma mater, the University of Georgia Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.  He will be recognized during a ceremony on Thursday, May 10, 2012, in Athens, Georgia and will also serve as Grady’s commencement speaker this year.

The Holliman Award is named for former CNN reporter John Holliman, Jr., and is given to a Grady alumnus who has made “exceptional contributions within their journalistic profession.”  Ingles has been a professional radio broadcaster for more than 50 years, including 24 years as sports director and morning drive sports anchor  for WCBS Radio in New York where he covered major events including the Olympics, World Series, Super Bowl, U.S. Open and Masters Golf.  He also worked as a color commentator for the NY Jets and college basketball games at WCBS Radio and the CBS Radio Network.  In addition, he was a play-by-play broadcaster for the first Super Bowl game broadcast by the CBS Radio Network, where he also anchored baseball and football Hall of Fame ceremonies and NFL drafts.  On CBS-TV, he was a broadcaster for the “NFL Today” pre-game show.  

Ingles joined Radio Hofstra University WRHU 88.7 FM in 1996, where he has worked extensively with students in the news and sports departments.  Under the leadership of WRHU General Manager Bruce Avery, Ingles has taught and mentored many of the station’s students who have gone on to win several top awards for college radio.  “Hofstra University and WRHU Radio have been tremendously fortunate to have Ed's incredible gifts and dedication at the service of our students as WRHU's professional in residence,” says School of Communication Dean Evan W. Cornog. “We are delighted to see him granted this high honor by his alma mater.”  

WRHU is ranked fifth among the nation’s best college radio stations by Princeton Review, and has served as the flagship station for all New York Islanders game broadcasts during the last  two seasons of the National Hockey League.  Long Island’s oldest non-commercial radio station, WRHU broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 88.7 FM and online at wrhu.org.  With a staff of more than 175 members and a program schedule that includes 42 varying formats, the award-winning radio station prides itself on pre-professional broadcast training and development as part of Hofstra’s School of Communication.
