Hofstra Welcomes Third Grade "Art Travelers"
Gathering of Freeport, Hempstead and Uniondale Students Part of Museum Educational Program Sponsored by JPMorgan Chase
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … Third graders from the Freeport, Hempstead and Uniondale school districts who have been writing to one other throughout the 2011-2012 school year will meet for the first time during an event sponsored by the Hofstra University Museum on Friday, June 15, 2012, 1-2:30 p.m. at HofUSA, North Campus. The children fostered pen pal relationships with one another as part of the Museum program Art Travelers through Time: Literacy and History through Art, made possible by a generous grant from JPMorgan Chase. The gathering is the culmination of another successful year of grant-funded programs, that have encouraged classes to visit the Hofstra University Museum, allowing children to become “art travelers.” The program fosters connections between their cultural and history-based lessons in the classroom with artworks and works from around the world they are introduced to from the Museum’s permanent collection. Working in partnership with teachers and district administrators, Museum educators also visit the classes to introduce and reinforce the concepts studied in the Art Travelers program and the relationships to class curriculum.
The June 15 gathering will include a performance by Patricia Shih, whose eclectic style blend folk music with jazz, Broadway, classical, rock and country. Her lyrics are concerned with peace, tolerance, the environment and the rights and dignity of all living things.
The Hofstra University Museum has been privileged to present the JP Morgan Chase Art Travelers Through Time: Literacy and History through Art program since 2006.
The Hofstra University Museum has been awarded the highest honor a museum can receive, continued accreditation by the American Association of Museums (AAM). Approximately 4 percent of museums nationwide have earned this distinguished recognition. Accreditation certifies that the Hofstra University Museum operates according to professional standards, manages its collections responsibly and provides quality service to the public.
