NORA V. DEMLEITNER NAMED INTERIM DEAN OF HOFSTRA SCHOOL OF LAW
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY - Nora V. Demleitner has been named interim dean of Hofstra School of Law effective immediately, Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz announced today. Dean Demleitner has been a member of the law school faculty since 2001 and has served as the vice dean for academic affairs for the past year.
"I am truly pleased that Professor Demleitner has agreed to serve as interim dean of the Law School," said President Rabinowitz. "She is an integral part of the Hofstra Law community already and I am confident that her talent and dedication will help propel the law school forward in the coming year."
Dean Demleitner received her J.D. from Yale Law School, her B.A. from Bates College, and also holds an LL.M. with distinction in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown University Law Center. After law school, she clerked for the Hon. Samuel A. Alito, Jr., then a member of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. She testified in front of the U.S. Senate on behalf of Justice Alito's nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Dean Demleitner teaches and has written widely in the areas of criminal, comparative, and immigration law. Her special expertise is in sentencing and collateral sentencing consequences. She is a managing editor of the Federal Sentencing Reporter, and serves on the executive editorial board of the American Journal of Comparative Law. She is the lead author of Sentencing Law and Policy, a major casebook on sentencing law, published by Aspen Law & Business. Her articles have appeared in the Stanford, Michigan, and Minnesota law reviews, among others. Professor Demleitner lectures widely in the United States and Europe.
She has served as a visiting professor at the University of Michigan Law School, the University of Freiburg, Germany, St. Thomas University School of Law in Miami, and the Sant' Anna Institute of Advanced Research in Pisa, Italy. She has also been a visiting researcher at the Max-Planck-Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Germany, funded by a German Academic Exchange Service grant.
Dean Demleitner will be supported in her role by newly appointed Interim Senior Vice Dean for Academic Affairs Michelle M. Wu. Dean Wu, who joined Hofstra in 2004 as the director of the Deane Law Library and as an associate professor of law, has held positions at the law libraries of the University of Houston and George Washington University. Dean Wu holds an M.Libr. with Law Librarianship Certificate from the University of Washington and a J.D. from California Western School of Law. Dean Demleitner and Dean Wu are supported by Vice Dean for Administration Miriam R. Albert and Associate Dean for Faculty Development Joanna Grossman.
Dean Demleitner will take over the administration of the law school from Dean Aaron Twerski, who served in that post for two years. Dean Twerski recently announced his resignation due to health concerns.
A formal search committee for a dean will be formed shortly to begin an international search for the next permanent dean of Hofstra Law School.
