Hofstra honored for community service by Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY - Hofstra University is being honored by the Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County with its "Embracing the Vision Gold Award" at the organization's annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund dinner-dance on Jan. 15, 2010.

The award is presented annually in tribute to Dr. King "to an organization providing twenty-plus years of community services," Commission Executive Director Iris A. Johnson wrote in a letter to University President Stuart Rabinowitz.

The EOC, based in Hempstead, is Nassau County's anti-poverty agency, running a variety of community outreach programs including Head Start programs, pre-natal clinics, senior citizen and youth development programs.

"Hofstra has always been keenly aware that its mission is not only to serve our students, but also the greater Long Island community we are so proud to be a part of," Rabinowitz said. "This award is especially gratifying because it is bestowed as a tribute to Dr. King, whose visit to our campus in 1965, when he was given an honorary degree and delivered the commencement speech, is among the proudest moments in our history."

Hofstra University is a dynamic private institution where students can choose from about 150 undergraduate and more than 160 graduate offerings in liberal arts and sciences, business; engineering; communication; education, health and human services;  and honors studies, as well as a School of Law. The University also provides excellent facilities with state-of-the-art technology, extensive library resources and internship programs that match students' interests and abilities with appropriate companies and organizations.  The Hofstra community is driven, dynamic and energetic, helping students find and focus their strengths to prepare them for a successful future.
