Hofstra Opera Theater Presents "Tartuffe"

February 1, 2 and 3, 2008

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … Hofstra Opera Theater, featuring artistic direction by Patricia Heuermann and musical direction by David Ramael, will present Kirke Mechem’s Tartuffe, a comic opera based on the Molière play. Performances are February 1, 2 and 3, 2008 at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus, Hofstra University.

With 260 performances in 70 productions since its 1980 San Francisco Opera premiere, Tartuffe has become one of the most popular operas ever written by an American. The synopsis of the opera focuses on Tartuffe, a religious hypocrite, who insinuates his way into Orgon’s house and tries to marry his daughter. Orgon’s wife, Elmire, sees through Tartuffe and plots to trick him into seducing her in order to open Orgon’s eyes. Tartuffe, however, takes control of the house and tries to get the owner arrested, but the king intervenes and saves the family.

Show times are 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday. For more information call the Hofstra Box Office (516) 463-6644, Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.  Tickets are $15, $12 for senior citizens (over 65) and matriculated non-Hofstra students with ID.
