Hofstra Professor Elected to National Geographers Group

Dr. Grant Saff Elected as a Regional Councilor for the Association of American Geographers

Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y. – Dr. Grant Saff, Professor and Chair, Department of Global Studies and Geography, has been named the Middle States Division Councilor of the Association of American Geographers (AAG).

Dr. Saff will act as liaison between the AAG and the geography programs in his region, consisting of Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. He will bring their academic needs and accomplishments to the attention of the National AAG Governing Board, as well as disseminating information and data from the AAG back to the regional programs. His term with the Association is from 2012-2015. 

The AAG, founded in 1904, is the world’s largest academic geography association, and its nine regional councilors serve on the National Governing Council. For 100 years the AAG has contributed to the advancement of geography. Its members from more than 60 countries share interests in the theory, methods, and practice of geography, which they cultivate through the AAG's Annual Meeting, two scholarly journals (Annals of the Association of American Geographers and The Professional Geographer), and a  monthly AAG Newsletter.

Dr. Saff has degrees in Economic History and History (BA Honors), and Secondary Education (HDE), from the University of Cape Town; Development Planning (MSc) from the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of the Witwatersrand; and Urban Planning and Policy (PhD), from the Bloustein School of Planning and Policy at Rutgers University.  He has professional experience as an urban planner and has published widely on urban issues in the US and South Africa, including in the AAG’s two major journals. He has chaired the Department of Global Studies and Geography since its founding in 2008. Global Studies and Geography have become extremely popular majors at Hofstra and the Department has gained increasing national and regional recognition.
