HOFSTRA'S "GREAT WRITERS, GREAT READINGS" SERIES TO NEXT FEATURE SHORT STORY AUTHOR DEBORAH EISENBERG

Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York ... Renowned short story author Deborah Eisenberg will be the featured speaker in the next installment of Hofstra University’s “Great Writers, Great Readings” series. Her reading will take place on Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Guthart Cultural Center Theater, located on the first floor of the Axinn Library, South Campus.

“Great Writers, Great Readings” was launched by Hofstra University in recognition of the importance of writing and literature in a liberal arts education. In addition to a baccalaureate degree in English, Hofstra offers a Master of Arts in English and Creative Writing. The program’s faculty include eminent essayist Philip Lopate, writers Erik Brogger and Julia Markus and two Guggenheim Fellows: novelist Martha McPhee and poet Phillis Levin.

Deborah Eisenberg is the author of four short story collections, Transactions in a Foreign Currency (1986), All Around Atlantis (1997), Under the 82nd Airborne (1992), and Twilight of the Superheroes (2006). The Stories (So Far) of Deborah Eisenberg, published by Noonday Press in 1998, combines the author’s two earliest collections in one volume. Ms. Eisenberg is also the author of a play, Pastorale, which was produced by Second Stage in New York in 1982, and she has written for The New Yorker, Bomb and The Yale Review.

In 2000 she received The Rea Award for the Short Story, which recognizes significant contributions to the short story form. She is the recipient of a Whiting Writers’ Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and five O. Henry Awards. She is currently a professor of creative writing at the University of Virginia.

Ms. Eisenberg receives consistent acclaim for her strong portrayal of characters dealing with the confusion of modern life.

Sarah Ruhl
was a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for her play The Clean House. Her newest work, Dead Man’s Cell Phone, was performed at Playwrights Horizons in March 2008 starring Mary-Louise Parker.
