The Big Game Star Party at Hofstra

Astronomy Outreach Program offers alternative to Sunday’s Big Game, featuring more stars than a halftime show

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Those who won’t be glued  to their televisions for the big game can watch a much bigger show – the moon, the Orion Nebula, Jupiter and its moons, and the Pleiades star cluster!

Hofstra's astronomy outreach program is once again offering Big Game Star Party, on Sunday, February 5, 2012 for anyone looking to watch something other than the Super Bowl.. Hofstra is excited to be hosting volunteers from the Long Island-based Amateur Observers Society of New York, who will assist in the event.  The Big Game Star Party will take place from 6-8 p.m. at the Hofstra Observatory atop Herman A. Berliner Hall, California Avenue at Huntington Place, South Campus.

A viewing area with several telescopes will be set up to ensure adequate star-gazing for the evening.  The program each year gathers children and adults of all ages from Hofstra and the outside community to enjoy the roof-top party and programming.  The event  will begin with an introduction to the winter sky by Hofstra astronomers.  There will also be a Planetarium Featured Presentation  to be shown at the event.  For those who still want to sneak a peek or keep tabs on the game, a viewing area for the game will be set up next to the observatory.

For more information or for updates and the latest weather information is available at (516) 463-2 SKY (2759), or at www.hofstra.edu/astronomy. For more information e-mail: observatory@hofstra.edu
