Hofstra's "ONE" Chapter Leader Attends National Summit in D.C.

Elite Student Summit Welcomes Nation's Foremost Student Activists

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Hofstra University’s ONE Chapter Co-President Katherine (Kaytee) Lozier was one of more than 120 of the nation’s top student activists to participate in the first-ever ONE student summit in Washington, D.C.

The three-day summit gave student activists the opportunity to meet some of the political and policy figures who have led the fight against extreme poverty and disease, including former Senate Majority Leader Bill First, the Council on Foreign Relations’ Gene Sperling, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and Paul Begala, political contributor and Democratic strategist on CNN’s The Situation Room.

“The entire summit was so inspiring for me. Not only did I take away valuable information from a number of experts, but I was able to share ideas with the other students to see what worked the best on their campus,” said Kaytee. “I will definitely apply what I learned here in the upcoming semesters at Hofstra.”

Students earned an invitation to the Summit by being one of the student leaders at the top 100 campuses nationwide, as determined by the schools that rank within the top 100 schools in the ONE Campus Challenge.

ONE Hofstra Chapter held events in the fall for the Global Day of Action Against Poverty and World AIDS Day. The group also participated in the nationwide ONE Campus Challenge to raise awareness about ONE to the Hofstra community Hofstra placed first among 1,200 campuses in that competition. Hofstra’s student group received 140 tickets to the Alicia Keys Keep A Child Alive Black Ball.


“To earn her spot at the conference, Kaytee organized her peers to take actions that will create lasting change. They called their members of Congress. They recruited other students and they asked presidential candidates what they are doing to address these issues,” said ONE spokesperson Kimberly Cadena. “Kaytee is one of many student leaders across the U.S. who will accomplish great things individually in the coming semester, but together they will change the world in their lifetimes.”

Hofstra University is a dynamic private institution where students can choose from about 145 undergraduate and 155 graduate programs in liberal arts and sciences, business, communication, education and allied human services, and honors studies, and a School of
