Hofstra University Announces New B.S. in Dance Education

The First and Only Program of Its Kind in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … Hofstra University has announced a new bachelor of science degree in dance education. This is the first program of its kind in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, New York.

Hofstra’s B.S. in dance education prepares highly skilled and creative dancers to design and implement innovative dance education programs. Upon the successful completion of the degree, students are eligible for New York state initial certification as a teacher of dance in all grades. They are certified to teach dance in public schools and will also be qualified to teach in private schools, dance studios and community centers.

Dance education majors enroll in the same dance classes as the dance majors, in addition to education and dance education courses, and liberal arts classes. After two years of majoring in dance, students may choose to specialize in dance education by their junior year.  The program culminates with student teaching of dance in public schools in Long Island and New York City.

As the first dance education program on Long Island, Hofstra is also becoming a center for dance education on Long Island and New York City. Twice a year the Dance Program sponsors Dance Educator’s Day, an opportunity for dance teachers to share information, take a dance class, and see a performance.  Several times a year Hofstra also welcomes students from high school dance programs to spend the day with the Hofstra dance majors. Many high schools on Long Island have visited, including East Hampton, Hauppauge, Herricks, John F. Kennedy, Lawrence, Levittown Divisional Avenue, Long Island Lutheran, Paul D. Schreiber, St. John the Baptist, Walt Whitman, and West Islip High Schools.
