Hofstra University's Irish Studies Program Announces Spring 2011 Events Calendar

Film

Wednesday, April 13, 6 to 8:30 p.m.
The Van
Screen adaptation of Roddy Doyle’s novel. Directed by Stephen Frears, starring Colm Meaney, Donal O'Kelly and Ger Ryan. The film explores the trials and tribulations of self-employment. This event is part of Hofstra’s Reel Ireland Film Series. Discussion to follow, led by Margaret Burke, Hofstra University Library Operations.

Thursday, February 24, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
An English Poet in Dublin: Gerard Manley Hopkins
Professor Lynn Cohen of Hofstra University’s School for University Studies will discuss Hopkins' relationship to Ireland and her perspective on the influential Victorian poet.
Location: 246 East Library Wing, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, South Campus. Free admission.

Tuesday, March 1, 9 to 11 a.m.                                                                   
The Killing Snows: Fiction and the Famine
Author Charles Egan will discuss how his discovery of a Famine Relief payroll in a farm building in County Mayo led him to dramatize one of the most tragic moments of Ireland’s great tragedy.
Location: Room 104 Davison Hall, South Campus. Free admission.

Carrying the Songs: Readings by Moya Cannon
Poet Moya Cannon will read recent and selected works. Cannon won the inaugural Brendan Behan Award as well as the Laurence O Shaughnessy Award. She has edited Poetry Ireland Review and is currently Director of the International Writers’ Course, National University of Ireland-Galway.

Thursday, April 28, 6 to 8 p.m.
Remaking Ireland: The Easter Rising and Today
Presented by Hofstra’s Irish Studies Program. Co-sponsored by the Irish Monument Committee and the Consulate General of Ireland. The Glucksman Chair of Irish Studies at NYU, Professor Joe Lee, will reflect upon the legacy and contemporary implications of the Easter Rising.
Location: The Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, California Avenue, South Campus.

Thursday, March 17, noon to 1:30 p.m.
Irish Cultural and History Readings
co-sponsored by the Hofstra University Women’s Studies Program
Join us and recite a snippet from your favorite reading by a female Irish author or with a theme related to Irish women in celebration of both St. Patrick’s Day and Women’s History Month.
Location:  Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library Lobby, Main Floor, South Campus. Free admission.

Saturday, April 2, 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Irish Family Fun Day
Irish Family Fun Day gives local students and families a chance to learn about and celebrate Irish culture. Children will learn about Irish arts and crafts, Gaelic sports, traditional music, step dancing, and the Irish language. There will also be storytelling and films. Children will share what they learn during an ice cream and
cookies social.
Location: Hofstra USA and Intramural Fields, North Campus. Admission is $5 per family.
