Hofstra University School of Medicine in partnership with North Shore-LIJ Health System to Host Series of Public Education Programs and Free Screenings on Kidney Health

Hofstra University School of Medicine in partnership with North Shore-LIJ Health System are sponsoring a series of free public kidney health workshops and screenings.  All of these programs take place in the Hofstra University Student Center, on North Campus, in Room 143.

A Tale of Two Kidneys
Thursday, February 26th, 3 pm - 5 pm
This program covers how to prevent CKD.  It discusses common problems damaging the kidney, the five stages of CKD, and how to treat and slow the progression of CKD.  Following the program, a free onsite instant microalbuminuria screening (a urine test to check if protein is present) is provided.
 
CKD & Diabetes Self-Management
Thursday, March 12th, 3 pm - 5 pm
This program presents successful strategies on how to control diabetes in order to avoid CKD and all other complications.

Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP) Screening
Saturday, March 28, 2009, 10 am to 3 pm
Hofstra University Student Center, Multi-Purpose Room, Ground Floor

Chronic kidney disease can be detected in the early stages through routine laboratory tests.  The National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP) is a free public health screening program designed to identify those at increased risk for kidney disease and to encourage them to seek further evaluation and follow-up from a physician. 

Anyone with high blood pressure or diabetes or who has a family member with high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney disease is at increased risk and should attend.  Participants must be 18 years of age or older.  You must make an appointment to attend the KEEP screening!  Call Terry Tan at 516-465-8215.

About the Hofstra University School of Medicine in partnership with North Shore-LIJ Health System
Once established, the Hofstra University School of Medicine in partnership with North Shore-LIJ Health System will join the eight schools and colleges of Hofstra University. Plans to create the new school were announced in October 2007. The agreement received approval from the boards of both Hofstra University and North Shore-LIJ Health System in the late winter of 2008, and was formally signed on March 26, 2008. Hofstra University School of Medicine in partnership with North Shore-LIJ Health System, which hopes to admit its first class in 2011, is currently pursuing preliminary accreditation with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and requisite New York State approval.
