"Galileo's Muse: A Tale of Music, Physics, Creativity and Insight"

Presented by Hofstra University's IDEAS Institute, Thursday, March 10th, 2011 7-9:30pm at the Helene Fortunoff Theatre, Monroe Lecture Center

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – In an interesting marriage of music and physics, Hofstra's IDEAS Institute continues the 2010-2011 Science Evenings with IDEAS series with "Galileo's Muse: A Tale of Music, Physics, Creativity and Insight," featuring department of music professor Benjamin Wolff, who will explore the surprising relationship between the scientist Galileo Galilei and the music of late Renaissance Italy. The performance tells the story of how Galileo's love of music and his experience as a lute player held the key to one of his most important scientific accomplishments – the formulation of his "Law of Falling Bodies."

With rarely performed music by Galileo's father and brother, early 17th century Italian trio sonatas, and a re-enactment of the experiment of the inclined plane, Galileo's Muse draws the audience into the creative process through the musical performance, by revealing in words, sights, and sounds, how insight often emerges from where we least expect it.
