Zarb School of Business will host a "Does it pay to be in a family business?" roundtable discussion on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 from 4:30 to 6 pm at the Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center Theater, North Campus.

Guest speakers Helene Fortunoff, Kenneth Brodlieb and Dave McQueary will share their personal experiences and discuss how to overcome some of the challenges that family business owners encounter. Discussion topics include how to pass on the attributes that contributed to the success of the family business, how to structure job responsibilities among family members and what to do when key family members don't want to stay in the business. Norman Goldberg, who teaches a continuing education course at Hofstra about running at family business, will act as moderator.

"It is important for us to offer business students a balance of academic lecture and presentations from practitioners so they better understand what it takes to apply their analytical skills to real-world experiences. Having the opportunity to interact with individuals who have first-hand knowledge of what it takes to run a successful business is invaluable for our students," said Zarb School Dean Salvatore F. Sodano.

Helene Fortunoff, president emeritus of the retail conglomerate Fortunoff, won a number of prestigious awards while shattering the traditional dominance of men in the jewelry industry. Mrs. Fortunoff was the first recipient of both the National Jewelers Award for retailing excellence and the Morris B. Zale Award for retailing excellence. She's received the American Gem Society's 2001 Triple Zero Award and was appointed chairwoman of the Gemological Institute of America's board of governors.

Kenneth Brodlieb serves as chairman of East Hills Chrysler Jeep Dodge, Inc.; managing partner of Tee to Green Pro Services Inc., a golf management company; and managing partner of Tee to Green at Sunken Meadow.

David McQueary is the former president of McQueary Brothers, a family-owned and operated pharmaceutical distribution company that was in business for eighty-four years before being sold in 2008.

Norman Goldberg has held senior positions with The Wiz, Cablevision, Fortunoff, Christian Dior, USA, Bloomingdales and Diane Von Furstenberg. He has also served as an advisor to a number of families who face daily conflicts trying to maintain and grow a successful business without disrupting personal and work relationships among family members.
