Mr. Krugman, who is also the author of Conscience of a Liberal (2007, W.W. Norton & Co.), will speak on "Can American Democracy Survive the Growing Wealth Gap." A question-and-answer period will follow his talk, which is sponsored by the Departments of Economics, History, and Sociology and the Center for Civic Engagement in conjunction with the Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Mr. Krugman is one of several speakers appearing at Hofstra as part of the International Scene Lecture Series. His lecture is also part of Hofstra's yearlong Educate '08 initiative, an unprecedented educational effort that engages not only students and faculty but also the public in a year-long series of conferences, events and lectures leading up to the final presidential debate at Hofstra on Oct. 15, 2008.
