Bix, the Frederick W. Thomas Professor of Law and Philosophy at the University of Minnesota, on Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at 11:10 a.m. at the Sidney R. Siben and Walter Siben Moot Courtroom. Brian H. Bix is the Frederick W. Thomas Professor of Law and Philosophy at the University of Minnesota. He holds a J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard University, and a doctorate from Oxford University. Prior to joining the Minnesota faculty in 2001, he clerked for Justice Alan B. Handler of the New Jersey Supreme Court and Judge Stephen Reinhardt of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and taught at King’s College, University of London and Quinnipiac Law School. He has also been a visiting professor at the Georgetown University Law Center and George Washington Law School. Professor Bix writes on family law, jurisprudence, and contract law. He is the author or editor of 10 books, including Family Law: Cases, Text, Problems (4th ed., 2004) with Ellman, Scott, Kurtz & Weithorn and Jurisprudence: Theory and Context (4th ed., 2006), and more than 60 articles. His work has appeared in the Michigan Law Review, Virginia Law Review, University of Pennsylvania Law Review, and University of Illinois Law Review, among other journals, and has been translated into Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Greek, South Korean and Turkish.

The Sidney and Walter Siben Distinguished Professorship Lecture in Family Law and Torts was established in 1984 and is supported by a gift from the firm of Siben & Siben located in Bay Shore, New York. Its purpose is to promote scholarly research, conferences and publications in the fields of torts and family law. Previous Sidney and Walter Siben Distinguished Professorship Lecturers include Hendrik A. Hartog Class of 1921 Bicentennial Professor of the History of American Law and Liberty, Princeton University and Jack B. Weinstein, then Chief Judge, United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
