Amity Shlaes, noted political economist, to speak at Hofstra

Bloomberg News Columnist and author of “The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression” will deliver 2010 Donald J. Sutherland Lecture

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY-  Political economist Amity Shlaes, author of a New York Times best-selling book on the Great Depression and a former editorial board member at the Wall Street Journal, will deliver this year's Donald J. Sutherland Lecture - a talk entitled "FDR's New Deal: Lessons for President Obama" - on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, 3-4:30 p.m. at Monroe Lecture Center Theater, California Avenue, South Campus.

Shlaes is a senior fellow in economic history at the Council of Foreign Relations and a syndicated columnist with Bloomberg News who is considered one of the nation's top experts on the Great Depression and the New Deal. She has written for the New Yorker, The National Review, and has appeared on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer, The Daily Show, Good Morning America and Charlie Rose. Her book, "The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression" (HarperCollins, 2007) was a New York Times best seller and can be purchased at the Hofstra University bookstore.

The 2010 Donald J. Sutherland Lecture, named for the former trustee who endowed the annual event, is co-sponsored by the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Department of Political Science and the Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency.
