Executive Director of Hofstra’s National Center for Suburban Studies honored by the Press Club of Long Island

Lawrence C. Levy to be given lifetime achievement award

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY -  Lawrence C. Levy, executive director of Hofstra University's National Center for Suburban Studies, will be honored by the Press Club of Long Island with its Phil Spahn award at the organization's annual awards dinner on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at the Woodbury Country Club, Woodbury, N.Y.

Levy, who joined Hofstra to lead the NCSS in 2007, is a former Newsday reporter, editorial writer and columnist being honored for "his leadership, ability and outstanding service to journalism during his 30-year career," according to the Press Club of Long Island.

"Larry brings a tremendous passion and commitment to whatever he does, and Hofstra is pleased to see his excellent work recognized by the Press Club,"  said Hofstra Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.

During his journalism career, Levy won many of journalism's top awards, including being named a Pulitzer Finalist in 1999. In his role at the National Center for Suburban Studies, he works with the center's academic director to shape an innovative agenda for suburban study, forging alliances with other institutions, not-for-profit groups and government agencies and promoting the study of the suburbs nationwide. He is a member of a Brookings Institution advisory panel, guest contributor to NYTimes.com and CNN.com and appears frequently on local and national television and radio.

"The awards that mean the most are those from people who know you best," Levy said of the Press Club honor. "That's what makes the Spahn award so special to me - it's all about local journalism and local service. And that's what I'm proudest of in my career, at Newsday and at Hofstra."
