Hofstra's Kurt Salzinger Elected President of the Eastern Psychological Association

Senior Scholar in Residence to serve three-year term for nation's oldest regional psychological association

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY –  Kurt Salzinger, Ph.D., professor emeritus and senior scholar in residence in Hofstra's Department of Psychology, has been elected president of the Eastern Psychological Association (EPA), the nation's oldest regional psychological association.

Dr. Salzinger will serve as EPA president-elect for a year beginning June 1, 2008, then as president for a one-year term beginning June 1, 2009, and as past president for one year starting  June 1, 2010. He will preside as president at the 2010 regional conference in Brooklyn.

"The EPA is a venerable organization that has had B. F. Skinner and other persons of note serve as president," said Dr. Salinger. "It also happens to be the organization in which I presented my very first paper in my career. My role in being president is to keep up its very high standards and to make certain that graduate students continue to be attracted to it as well." Dr. Salzinger said he also hopes to update the group's communications including the use of Web-based presentations.

Founded in 1896, the EPA strives to advance the science and profession through the dissemination of professional information about the field of psychology. At its annual meeting, psychologists from all fields present the latest advances in professional and scientific work.

Dr. Salzinger, a senior scholar in residence since January 2003, first arrived at Hofstra in 1992. He retired in 2001 to become executive director for science at the American Psychological Association in Washington DC., returning to Hofstra in 2003. He also was president of the New York Academy of Sciences, served on the APA board of directors, and was president of Divisions 1 (General Psychology) and 25 (Behavior Analysis), and of the American Association of Applied and Preventive Psychology. He served as the first chair of the board of the Cambridge Center from 1986-1988, subsequently as a member until 1991 and again as a board member since 2004. He is author or editor of 12 books and more than 120 articles and book chapters.
