A Summer of Swinging, Singing and Doo-Wop

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY ... Hofstra Entertainment brings the sweet sounds of swing, Broadway and doo-wop to the Hofstra stage this summer with productions in July, August and September, 2011.

July 23 and 24: Summer Swing – A Big Band Celebration features Joe Battaglia and The New York Big Band with special guest vocalists. Hofstra Entertainment Executive Producer Bob Spiotto says, “This is a tribute to some of the greatest big bands ever heard. This will be a full big band swinging celebration of the music of Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington, and the list goes on.”

Show times are 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus. Tickets are $30 adult, $25 senior citizen (over 65) and $20 for matriculated students with ID.

August 19-28: Rodgers and Hammerstein’s A Grand Night for Singing is, according to Mr. Spiotto, “a celebration of the unforgettable music of Rodgers and Hammerstein.” This Tony Award-nominated revue features songs from several lesser-known works such as Allegro, Me and Juliet, State Fair, and Pipe Dream, as well as selections from Flower Drum Song, Carousel, Oklahoma!, The King and I, South Pacific, Cinderella, and The Sound of Music.

Show times are 8 p.m. on Friday, August 19 and 26; 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 20 and 27; and 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 21 and 28 at the Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, California Avenue, South Campus. Tickets are $28 adult, $23 senior citizen (over 65) and $18 for matriculated students with ID.

September 24 and 25: “Looking for an Echo” The Sound of Doo Wop and Rock ‘n’ Roll is a must-see for doo-wop fans. Mr. Spiotto says the show will “pay tribute to the tradition that is known as doo-wop as well as the early origins of rock ‘n’ roll and the music of the 1950s, the ‘60s and even the early ‘70s.” The evening includes performances by The Brooklyn Bridge, The Del-Satins, The Clusters and Tony Ferrari’s Chaperone Salute and The Midlife Crisis Band.

Show times are 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 25, at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus. Tickets are $30 adult, $25 senior citizen (over 65) and $20 for matriculated students with ID.
