SOEHHS Presents Reading Miscue Analysis Conference, Celebrating Yetta Goodman

Renowned Reading Studies Scholars Yetta and Ken Goodman to Participate

June 29-July 2, 2011

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY  ... The work of internationally renowned literacy researcher, scholar and teacher Dr. Yetta Goodman will be celebrated at the eighth Hofstra Reading Miscue Analysis Conference, June 29-July 2, 2011, at Hagedorn Hall, South Campus. Both Yetta Goodman and her husband, Dr. Ken Goodman, one of the most important scholars in the field of reading research, will be participating in this event.

The conference will feature approximately 30 presenters from around the United States.  Participants from Taiwan, Kazakhstan, and Egypt will also be in attendance. 

Dr. Yetta Goodman coined the term “kidwatching” to describe the close observation of children in homes, schools, and communities that informs evaluation and teaching. Dr. Goodman pioneered research in such diverse areas as early literacy development, miscue analysis, Whole Language curriculum, writing process and teaching at all levels. With Dorothy Watson and Carolyn Burke, Yetta developed the Reading Miscue Inventory, bringing miscue analysis to the classroom. Her groundbreaking work in Retrospective Miscue Analysis (RMA) engages learners in meaningful conversations about reading. At this conference participants will be invited to join in retrospective conversations on kids and other readers, reading, literature and learning. 
 
Dr. Ken Goodman is considered one of the most important scholars in reading research. His theoretical model that reading involves constructing meaning across a text has been widely accepted, and has been used by teachers and literacy scholars to understand the reading process and students’ reading comprehension.  Goodman coined the term “miscue” to describe readers’ “errors” or unexpected responses. He found that miscues are “windows into the reading process” that provide insights into readers’ thinking and meaning making processes.

In connection with this conference, Hofstra is hosting the 4th Eye Movement Miscue Analysis (EMMA) Researchers Meeting.  This new field combines reading miscue analysis with eye tracking technology.  Hofstra has one of the few EMMA research labs, housed in the Saltzman Community Services Center.  Researchers from several labs across the country will be in attendance.
