Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … Dr. Paula Uruburu, associate professor of English and vice dean for the School for University Studies, is continuing to lecture and receive rave reviews for her book, American Eve: Evelyn Nesbit, Stanford White, the Birth of the ‘It’ Girl, and the Crime of the Century, published in the spring of 2008 and newly released in paperback from Riverhead Books.

On June 14 the Buffalo News released a list of “Beach Bag Books,” their list of great choices for summer reading. Number one on their list of biographies was American Eve, a “compellingly retold nonfiction narrative of the “crime of the century” – the 1906 murder of architect Stanford White by millionaire Harry K. Thaw.”

On Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at 4 p.m. Dr. Uruburu will give a lecture about American Eve at Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum in Lenox, Massachusetts. Her lecture will be followed by a Victorian Tea. This event is part of Ventfort Hall’s 2009 Summer Lecture Series. Admission for the lecture and Victorian Tea is $15 per person, members are $12. Dr. Uruburu’s American Eve is the story of the trial of millionaire Harry K. Thaw for the murder of his wife’s lover – renowned New York City architect Stanford White – which 100 years ago engendered an unprecedented media frenzy. The woman at its center was Helen of Troy and Delilah rolled into one:  the original Gibson Girl, the first “It Girl,” the Girl in the Red Velvet Swing – the first supermodel celebrity, Evelyn Nesbit.  Thaw was acquitted by reason of insanity, but the real story behind the “Crime of the Century” was Nesbit’s rise and fall.

Dr. Uruburu has been acknowledged as the expert on Evelyn Nesbit and has been widely published and has acted as a consultant to A&E, PBS, and the History Channel. Dr. Uruburu is also a specialist in American Literature, women’s studies, film history and 19th and 20th Century American popular culture. A native New Yorker, she lives in Lindenhurst, NY.
