Hofstra University Recognized Nine Times in Chronicle of Higher Education’s 2010 Great Colleges to Work For Survey

Hofstra also named to 2010 Honor Roll

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY -- Hofstra University is one of the best colleges to work for among institutions of its size, according to the results of the third-annual Chronicle of Higher Education 2010 Great Colleges to Work For program, which were released today.

Hofstra was cited for best practices in seven categories, and was one of just 39 institutions to make the Honor Roll for being recognized the most among schools of its size.  The Great Colleges to Work Forâ survey ranked Hofstra high in the following categories: collaborative governance, professional/career development programs, teaching environment, compensation and benefits, supervisor or department chair relationship, respect and appreciation, tenure clarity and process.

The complete results of the survey of more than 42,000 administrators, faculty and professional support staff members at 277 four- and two-year institutions can be viewed in a special supplement of The Chronicle (http://chronicle.com/academicworkplace).

"Creating a rewarding work environment is very important to the life of a university, and this is an affirmation of our efforts to make Hofstra a place that nurtures staff and faculty who are dedicated to serving our students," said University President Stuart Rabinowitz. "Being named to the Honor Roll is especially gratifying because it reflects the strength of our commitment to such core values as respect, hard work and collaboration."

The Chronicle's Great Colleges to Work Forâ program recognizes small groups of colleges, based on enrollment size, for best practices and policies. This year, 277 institutions participated in the survey, including 233 four-year institutions and 54 two-year schools. In all, 77 four-year schools and 20 two-year schools were recognized in at least one of the 15 categories.

To administer the survey and analyze the results, The Chronicle turned to ModernThink LLC, a strategic human capital consulting firm that has done numerous "best places to work" programs, surveying hundreds of thousands of employees. The Great Colleges survey included a two-part assessment: a survey of faculty, administrators and professional support staff, and an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies and practices from each institution. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback.
