Hofstra Comm Students Win National Award

Editors' Group Honors Campus Magazine Club as 2011 Chapter of the Year

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY... A national organization of magazine editors has named its Hofstra University campus chapter as this year’s Best Established Chapter in the country.

Ed2010, a group of rising professional and aspiring magazine editors with chapters in ten major cities and two dozen campuses, praised Hofstra’s “Ed on Campus” (EOC) chapter for its accomplishments during the 2010-11 school year, which included organizing two large-scale events connecting students with top magazine-industry leaders, as well as for a  compelling essay written by its president, Gennifer Delman (Hofstra ’12).

“It’s an absolute honor to be recognized by the national Ed2010 team,” said Delman.   “Their members have all held coveted positions in magazine media, and we are humbled  to be awarded for our accomplishments.  Our members are well on their way to achieving success in this competitive industry and we’re excited to continue our growth.”

EOC at Hofstra, which was founded in 2008 by Priscilla Rodriguez (Hofstra ’09),  hosted two of its largest and most successful events in the last year: “Turning the Page: The Future of Magazines,” where top magazine editors discussed the state of the industry, and “Alumni in the Magazine Industry,” where a panel of recent Hofstra graduates were invited to talk about their college experience and how it helped them land their jobs.

In her essay, Delman compared the revitalization of the Hofstra EOC chapter to the redesign of O, The Oprah Magazine by its editor-in-chief, Susan Casey:   “Much like Ms. Casey did with one of Hearst’s most profitable magazines, Hofstra’s Ed2010 chapter took a club that had needed to be reenergized and approached it with a fresh, exciting perspective.”   The chapter also encouraged its members to score important clips by creating a branch of Her Campus Media, and provided services such as résumé critiquing and internship advice.

“It's a wonderful honor for our students and our program.  And if you take a look at the work they've done, you can see that the award is well-deserved,” said Bob Papper, chair of the Journalism, Media Studies and Public Relations department in Hofstra’s School of Communication.

Delman noted that the faculty at the School of Communication helped foster the group’s success.  “Professors, especially our advisor Carol Fletcher, have been incredibly supportive and have been able to link the work we do in the club to our actual coursework,” she said.  “The courses within the journalism department give us the fundamental writing, reporting and editing skills necessary to succeed in this  industry. Plus, we learn how to write for both print and web media so we have an advantage when applying for jobs.”  Hofstra’s chapter members have scored prestigious internships at Town & Country, O, The Oprah Magazine, Seventeen, Harper’s Bazaar, Self, Teen Vogue, and other publications, and two recent graduates were hired at Cosmopolitan and Alloy Digital.

Hofstra EOC members are now planning several major events for the upcoming year, and Delman invites students from all majors to join, including those interested in graphic or web design, business, and photography.

Hofstra University is a dynamic private institution where students can choose from more than 150 undergraduate and 160 graduate programs in liberal arts and sciences, business, communication, education and allied health services and honor studies, as well as a School of Law and the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine.
