COLLEGE STUDENTS DISCUSS 9/11
MTV News Anchor Gideon Yago to explore impact of terrorist attacks on a generation
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY - MTV News Anchor Gideon Yago will lead a student forum on the campus of Hofstra University next week that explores the impact of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on today's youth. As Pearl Harbor and the assassination of John F. Kennedy were for earlier generations, September 11 was a defining event for Americans coming of age in 2001. For many, the time and place when they first learned of the attacks remain frozen in time.
The Student Town Hall, which will be held at Hofstra's Monroe Lecture Center on the South Campus on Tuesday, Sept. 5 from 2:45-4 p.m., is part of a symposium on "The Future of September 11" marking the fifth anniversary of the attacks. The program will begin with an on-stage conversation about 9/11 between Mr. Yago and a group of college students, then expand to include the entire audience.
The symposium runs from 12:30-7 p.m. at various locations on the Hofstra campus. Panels will explore the legacy of that day on the presidency, foreign policy, religion, the media and today's youth. How September 11 will continue to be remembered is the subject of another panel on the creation of a 9/11 memorial in New York, featuring Newsday architecture critic Justin Davidson; Clifford Chanin, senior program advisor to the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation; and artist Eric Fischl.
In concert with the symposium, "Voiceless in the Presence of Realities," an art exhibit of works that reflect our nation's response to 9/11, will open at the Hofstra Museum in Lowe Hall on September 5. The exhibit runs through December 10.
The symposium is presented by Hofstra University and the World Trade Center Family Center of South Nassau Communities Hospital, and sponsored by Newsday.
