The 50-mile race, sponsored by The Greater Long Island Running Club, begins at Jones Beach and ends at the Oyster Bay Long Island Rail Road station.

Honors College Dean Warren Frisina said he and Prof. Beverly Clendening from the Department of Biology, both of whom will be running, have committed themselves to raising at least the $2,000 entry fee, which goes to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Dean Frisina said the fundraiser is part of an Honors College tradition of engaging in a variety of social service projects.  “We're always looking for ways to help our students to see their inclinations toward civic engagement as a natural extension of their intellectual lives,” said Dean Frisina. “This time, we get to take that one step further as our runners use their ongoing quest for physical health as a tool for helping others.”

“Volunteering and community service are also a natural part of what students who are preparing for careers in health-related professions do,” said Prof. Clendening. “These students hope to devote their lives to serving the health needs of the larger community. This commitment does not start when they start their professional training; it is an integral part of their lives.”

Donations can be made at:  http://www.active.com/donate/ocean2sound/PrideTeam  or in the Honors College offices, lower level, Axinn Library. Every dollar donated to the effort on the Web page or in person also buys one chance to win an iPod Nano. The team also held a bake sale on Thursday, Sept. 6 in the Student Center to support their effort.
