HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY'S IDEAS INSTITUTE LAUNCHES FALL 2007 LECTURE SERIES
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, AT 7:30 P.M.: "SHINING LIGHT ON EXTRATERRESTRIAL MATTER"
Commemorating The 50th Anniversary Of The Launch Of Sputnik;
Lecture Preceded By A Science Education Open House for Those Interested in Teaching (3:30 to 6:30 p.m.)
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … Hofstra University's IDEAS Institute is launching its fall 2007 lecture series the same day as the 50th anniversary of the Sputnik launch. "Shining Light on Extraterrestrial Matter" by Antonio Lanzirotti, Ph.D., will discuss how the analysis of extraterrestrial materials is playing an increasingly important role in helping us understand the history of our early solar system.
Dr. Lanzirotti will discuss what we have learned about our solar system from the analysis of samples from the Moon, Mars, asteroids, interplanetary dust particles, and recently, cometary dust thanks to NASA's Stardust mission. Dr. Lanzirotti earned a doctorate in earth and space sciences from Stony Brook University in 1995, and is currently a senior research associate with the Center for Advanced Radiation Sources (CARS) at the University of Chicago. He is also a beamline scientist at the National Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven National Laboratory. His research interests include development of state-of-the-art X-ray microbeam techniques for trace element analysis of Earth, extraterrestrial and environment
This lecture is free and open to the public. It takes place on Thursday, October 4, 2007, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Monroe Lecture Center Theater, South Campus.
If science and the desire to teach science leaves you starry eyed, come to campus early to attend the Science Education Open House from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Hagedorn Hall, located along Hempstead Turnpike, east of the Hofstra Stadium.
