HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY'S DEPARTMENT OF DRAMA AND DANCE ANNOUNCES FALL 2007 PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … For tickets and more information on the following performances call the Hofstra Box Office at (516) 463-6644, Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased at www.tickets.com.

October 5 to 14
Six Characters in Search of An Author by Luigi Pirandello. Directed by Cindy Rosenthal. At the Black Box Theater, New Academic Building, South Campus

With a concept so startling it caused a riot at the play’s premiere, Pirandello brilliantly explores the nature of reality vs. illusion by introducing six mysterious characters from a script that has not yet been written. They interrupt a rehearsal of one of Pirandello’s own comedies, demanding that their unique and tragic story be told. Translated by Paul Avila Mayer.

Show times: Friday, October 5 and 12, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, October 6 and 13, at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, October 7 and 14, at 2 p.m.

Tickets: $10; $8 senior citizen (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra student with ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive one free ticket upon presentation of a current HofstraCard.

October 26 to November 4: A View from the Bridge by Arthur Miller. Directed by Peter Sander. At the John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus.

Caught between an uncontrolled, unacknowledged passion and the powerful values of loyalty and honor in the community, Eddie Carbone, a Red Hook longshoreman, must choose renunciation or betrayal. In this play, Arthur Miller has introduced one of his most haunting characters and one of his most emotionally explosive situations to create a drama of classic proportions.

Show times: Friday, October 26 and November 2, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, October 27 and November 3, at 8 p.m.; Sunday, October 28 and November 4, at 2 p.m.

Tickets: $12; $10 senior citizen (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra student with ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive one free ticket upon presentation of a current HofstraCard. Tickets on sale beginning October 9.

November 30 to December 9: Camille by Robert David MacDonald. Directed by James J. Kolb. At the Black Box Theater, New Academic Building, South Campus.

What happens when life is turned into art? Alexandre Dumas, fils (the younger) had an affair with a young French courtesan, Marie Duplessis. After she died of consumption, Dumas fils “picked over the bones of her life and turned them into a meal ticket.” First as a novel and then as a play, The Lady of the Camellias took Paris by storm. Verdi turned it into an opera, La Traviata, and in the 20th century Greta Garbo starred in the film Camille. MacDonald presents scenes from the play and the opera juxtaposed with the “real” story – a much less pretty picture than found in the play, opera or film.

Recommended for mature audiences only.

Show times: Friday, November 30 and December 7, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, December 1 and 8, at 8 p.m.; Sunday, December 2 and 9, at 2 p.m.

Tickets: $10; $8 senior citizen (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra student with ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive one free ticket upon presentation of a current HofstraCard. Tickets on sale beginning November 13.
