The show, “My Name is Reb, I Have This Art Show…,” will be on display through October 31 at the FORM Art Gallery at Calkins Hall, South Campus. Carlson is a public relations major in the School of Communication, but her minor and first love is fine arts.  Her show is a collection of acrylic paintings and charcoal drawings of an expressionistic nature. Carlson enjoys painting still-lifes and caricatures of “everyday objects and people seen in a different way.” 

Carlson, 20, is originally from Newark, DE, and has always been creative and enthusiastic about art. In recent years, her art has been put aside to make time for her major. She is a staff member of Hofstra’s radio station WRHU, an Honors College Student, public relations coordinator for FORM, a member of Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), and a museum educator at the Long Island Children’s Museum. Carlson makes it through her day by viewing things in a humorous light and using that inspiration for her art.  Despite her schedule, Carlson is impressed with her own progress in painting.  In her Intermediate Painting class (FA 46) last spring, she was asked to enter a themed three acrylic painting work, All in the Family, in the annual Calkins Student Art Show.  The work consists of three separate paintings; a typewriter, a printing kit, and a book that belong to her and various family members. All in the Family is one of the works in Carlson’s current exhibition. 
   
Carlson believes that in the turbulent times we face today, art can be used as a release. Art is not to be appreciated only by a privileged few, but a right for any individual. Carlson says “art should be viewed in a playful way with all senses.” Carlson hopes this show will get more Hofstra students interested in future FORM gallery openings. She plans to graduate in May 2010 and attend graduate school for Art Administration or Visual Culture Theory.
