Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Hofstra University and the Office of Student Leadership & Activities is participating in national Make A Difference Day on Saturday, October 24, 2009. Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, national Make A Difference Day is an annual event dedicated to helping others, neighbors helping neighbors.

In 2008, 3 million people cared enough about their communities to volunteer on Make A Difference Day, accomplishing thousands of projects in hundreds of towns.

This year Hofstra students will partner with the Hempstead Hispanic Civic Association during the “Hands on Community Garden” service learning project. From 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2009 Hofstra students will work alongside local elementary and middle school students to revitalize an urban vegetable/flower garden at Hempstead Hispanic Civic Association.

“Our students really pride themselves in reaching out to surrounding communities to help others,” said Assistant Director of Student Leadership and Activities Kim Rhyan. “It is important for students to have opportunities, such as Make a Difference Day to serve and make connections with the community."
