Edward J. Rollins, Howard Dean and David Brooks featured at symposium on presidential leadership

Rollins and Dean in first joint campus visit as Kalikow Center fellows NYT Columnist Brooks delivers keynote address

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Hofstra Senior Presidential Fellows Edward J. Rollins and Howard Dean, and New York Times columnist David Brooks will discuss the evolution of executive power on Nov. 4-5, 2009 as part of a symposium sponsored by the Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency, Hofstra Cultural Center and the School of Law.

The symposium, “President or King? Evaluating the Expansion of Executive Power from Abraham Lincoln to George. W. Bush”, marks the first joint campus appearance by Rollins, a Republican strategist and former presidential advisor, and Dean, the former Vermont governor, presidential candidate and Democratic National Committee chairman. The two were announced as Kalikow Center senior fellows in September.

Rollins and Dean will participate in the symposium’s final panel, which begins at 2:20 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Student Center Theater, north campus. Brooks, who also is a regular analyst on NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, will deliver the keynote address at 3 p.m. on Nov. 4  at Monroe Lecture Center, south campus.

Brooks’ keynote speech and the final panel featuring Rollins and Dean are free and open to the public. Attendance for the full, two-day symposium is $30. The symposium is free for Hofstra students, staff and faculty.

The symposium will bring scholars, practitioners and pundits together to examine the expansion of White House power since Lincoln, and what executive leadership means in modern presidential politics.

“We’re so pleased David Brooks is coming because he speaks to the public perspective on presidential power,” said Kalikow Center Director Meena Bose, PhD., “and how scholarly analysis of presidential leadership matches up with presidential leadership in practice.”

Rollins and Dean, meanwhile, offer an insider’s view of executive power from two of the nation’s best-known political advisors. As presidential fellows, the two men also will guest lecture and work with students in smaller, more informal settings throughout the year.

“With their experience and knowledge, they are uniquely qualified to examine the presidential power and how it has changed in modern American politics,” Bose said. “As two of the nation’s most respected political minds, they are an incredible educational resource for students and the community.”

The symposium is part of Hofstra’s Define '09: New Challenges, New Solutions, a year-long series of programs designed to examine the new presidential administration, its policies and initiatives, the challenges we currently face and ways of addressing our country's most pressing issues.
