Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … Hofstra University School of Law presents the 2007-2008 Howard Lichtenstein Distinguished Professorship of Legal Ethics Lecture Series on November 7, 2007, at 11:10 a.m. This year’s guest speaker is Carol M. Langford, attorney, San Francisco, California, who will present “Regulation of the Profession Through the Admissions Process And the Role of Law Schools in Defining Moral Character”

The Howard Lichtenstein Distinguished Professorship was established in 1989 to remember Howard Lichtenstein, an outstanding lawyer with a genuine interest in legal education and the training and development of young lawyers.  During his 44 years of practice, his primary concentration was in the field of labor law.  As a senior partner in the law firm of Proskauer Rose Goetz & Mendelsohn, he was considered an authority on administrative law.  In addition, Mr. Lichtenstein was a strong advocate for the teaching of legal ethics.

Carol M. Langford is a lawyer in the San Francisco Bay Area. She specializes in giving advice on legal ethics and discipline to attorneys, judges, law firms and corporations, and in representing lawyers and law students before the State Bar of California in disciplinary and admissions matters. She serves as a national expert witness in the ethics area. She was formerly a partner in the Walnut Creek office of the international law firm of Carroll, Burdick & McDonough LLP, where she was ethics adviser to the firm and a member of the New Business Committee.

Ms. Langford has devoted a considerable amount of her time to training lawyers in issues involving law practice management. She has also cowritten two books: a nationally adopted textbook titled Legal Ethics in the Practice of Law, 3rd Edition (Lexis Law Publishing, 2006) and The Moral Compass of the American Lawyer: Truth, Justice, Power and Greed (Ballantine, 1999).

In addition to her practice, she is the first person in California history to be elected chair of three committees/sections of the State Bar of California. She was chair of the Law Practice Management and Technology Committee of the State Bar of California and chair of the Council of Section Chairs. She has served as the chair and special adviser to the State Bar of California Committee on Professional Responsibility and Conduct, and has taught ethics as an adjunct professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law since 1992 and Hastings College of the Law. She has lectured and presented programs on ethics for the State Bar of California local bar associations, the Institute of Internal Auditors, Practising Law Institute (PLI), University of San Francisco School of Law, Hastings College of the Law, and Lawyers’ Mutual Insurance Company. Ms. Langford was the ethics consultant to the Judicial Council of California, and is a member of the Ethics Officers Association and the Mandatory Fee Arbitration Committee of the State Bar of California.

She is past chair of the Ethics Committee of the ABA Intellectual Property Section and she is a member of the California and Washington, D.C. state bars. She recently received a Woman of the Year Award from the Contra Costa County Commission on Women for “Women Working for Justice.”

Hofstra Law School was founded in 1970 and is accredited by the ABA, boasting an alumni body of approximately 8,000 graduates. The school is located on campus at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. In addition to its full-time juris doctor (J.D.) degree program, Hofstra Law School offers part-time day and evening J.D. programs as well as graduate degree programs, including an LL.M.
