As part of Hofstra University’s 75th anniversary celebration, Awake and Sing! commemorates Hofstra’s beginnings. Produced by the Group Theatre, the play premiered on Broadway at the Belasco Theatre on February 19, 1935 – the same year in which Hofstra opened its doors. Directed by Harold Clurman, the cast starred Luther Adler, Stella Adler, Morris Carnovsky and Sanford Meisner. It was revived off-Broadway in 1970, 1979, 1993, and 1995 and on Broadway in 1938, 1939, 1984 and 2007. This 2010 production at Hofstra is directed by Professor James Kolb.
Most critics consider Awake and Sing! to be Clifford Odets’ best play. The plot examines three generations of a Jewish family living in the Bronx as they struggle to survive during the Great Depression. Children, parents, a grandparent, and outsiders clash over issues of jobs, money, politics, revolution, war, and the American dream. Is there room for beauty, music, idealism in a world seemingly on the brink of destruction?
