Hofstra Professor Presents Lecture on World Trade Center Geology Excavations

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – The Institute for the Development of Education in the Advanced Sciences (IDEAS) within the School of Education, Health and Human Services, presents Geology Chair and Professor Charles Merguerian, Ph. D, who will discuss the unique geological discoveries have been made during recent excavations of the World Trade Center site.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, November 19, 2009 from 7:30 – 9 p.m. at Monroe Lecture Center Theater, South Campus.  This presentation is free and open to the public.

Geological visits to the WTC during blasting and construction as well as studying maps and debris samples, has allowed new information to emerge concerning the geological bedrock development of Manhattan. Dr. Merguerian will explain geological information about the grounds and what the construction site offers the study of geology, as well as New York City.

Dr. Merguerian is recognized as the leading authority on the geologic structure and tectonics of
the New York City area. In the past decade his research efforts have focused on field- and tunnel-mapping and laboratory research on the subsurface structure of New York City and surrounding areas.
