Wilbur F. Breslin Center for Real Estate Studies Conference on 21st Century Zoning

Developers of multi-family housing to speak on building mixed use communities

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Two nationwide developers of multi-family housing will speak during a conference presented by The Institute of Real Estate at Hofstra: "Historic Times, Unprecedented Opportunities: The Game Plan for Implementing 21st-Century Zoning"  on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 from 8 to 11 a.m. in the Student Center Theater, Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus.

Speakers Bryce Blair and Ron Terwilliger will address the issues they have faced around the country while building mixed-use developments, a building with more than one use. They will demonstrate how well-designed mixed-use communities offer an affordable and lifestyle that is attractive to the younger generation, couples and empty nesters; how they have built transit-oriented developments; the strategies used to gain community acceptance; and how they are currently incorporating affordable housing into mixed-use developments. 

Bryce Blair, chairman and chief executive officer of AvalonBay, has overseen the development of over $10 billion of multifamily assets. Mr. Blair earned his undergraduate degree in engineering from the University of New Hampshire and joined AvalonBay after earning an M.B.A. at Harvard Business School. Mr. Blair is a member of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO), the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (“NAREIT”) where he is on Executive Committee and the Board of Governors, and the Urban Land Institute (ULI) where he serves as a Trustee.

Ron Terwilliger is chairman of Trammel Crow Residential, the nation's largest multifamily housing developer. An honor graduate of the United States Naval Academy who served five years in the Navy, Mr. Terwilliger went on to earn an M.B.A. at Harvard Business School.  He is the current chairman of the board of Habitat for Humanity International. He also served in Atlanta as chair of the Mayor's Task Force for Affordable Workforce Housing. Mr. Terwilliger is a former chair of the Urban Land Institute and in February of 2007 he made the largest financial contribution in the history of the Urban Land Institute to measurably increase the production of workforce housing.

Gary Lewi, executive vice president of Rubenstein Associates, Inc., will moderate the discussion.
