HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS GAIN INSIGHT INTO THE WORLD OF JOURNALISM
Working Journalists from Today’s Top News Publications Share Their Journalism Knowledge
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY - Metropolitan area high school students will learn the ins and outs and the pros and cons of the journalism world from some of today's top working journalists at Student Press Day sponsored by Hofstra University's School of Communication and the Press Club of Long Island Society of Professional Journalists on December 13, 2006.
Student Press Day is a one-day seminar which explores a variety of journalism areas through presentations led by working professionals. The sessions explore the worlds of Online Journalism, Entertainment & Celebrities, Photojournalism, Interviewing, Graphic Arts, Opinion, Sports writing, and Editing/Layout and are presented by journalists from The New York Times, Newsday, the Daily News and Celebritycafe.com.
The major goal of this program according to Carol Fletcher, program director and Associate Professor of Journalism at Hofstra, is to enlighten students about the world of journalism and provide them with the opportunity to network with some working professionals.
"Some of these students might be looking at journalism as a career path or in the short term a major for their studies," said Carol. "This program will allow students to make those decisions with the knowledge of what the working journalism world is truly like."
The day-long seminar will begin with breakfast, provided by the sponsors, and a key note address from Hofstra Alum Kristen Shaughnessy of New York 1 News. Kristen has been with NY1 since 1995 as the station's weekend anchor and breaking news reporter and will enlighten students about the broadcast area of journalism news.
Hofstra University provides a dynamic college experience tailored for innately ambitious, outcome-oriented individuals. The Hofstra community is driven, dynamic, energetic and committed to helping students find and focus their strengths to prepare them for a successful future.
