Dept. of Music Announces Spring 2012 Concert Schedule

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … Unless otherwise noted, for more information on the performances below, call the Hofstra John Cranford Adams Playhouse Box Office at 516-463-6644, Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Members of the Hofstra community may receive one free ticket to each concert upon presentation of a current HofstraCard.

Friday, January 27, to Sunday, January 29
Hofstra Opera Theater presents Alcina by George Frideric Handel
Location: John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus
Artistic direction by Isabel Milenski and musical direction by David Ramael
Performance times are 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15 and $12 senior citizen (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra student with ID. Tickets on sale beginning January 10.

Sunday, February 12
Hofstra String Quartet
Location: The Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, California Avenue, South Campus
Performing works by Beethoven. The program will include two quartets, the exuberant String Quartet in B-flat Major, op. 18 no. 6, and the String Quartet in F minor, op. 95, “Serioso.” Concert time is 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 and $12 senior citizen (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra student with ID. Tickets on sale beginning January 17.

Saturday, March 3 and 10
The Hofstra Collegium Musicum presents The Shakespeare Festival Musical – “2 Bs or Not 2 Bs”
Directed by William E. Hettrick
Location: John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus
Featuring Christopher Morrongiello, lutenist. Performed with the Shakespeare Festival companion play Hamlet: A Bare Bodkin, a one-hour adaptation of Hamlet. Performance times are 2 p.m. Tickets are $11 and $8 senior citizen (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra student with ID. Tickets on sale beginning January 31.

Sunday, March 4
The American Chamber Ensemble (ACE) Spring Concert
Co-directed by Naomi Drucker and Blanche Abram
Location: The Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, California Avenue, South Campus
The American Chamber Ensemble will present a lively program that includes beloved masterworks, infrequently heard gems, and an exciting work by a Long Island composer. Join Naomi Drucker, clarinet; Blanche Abram and Marilyn Lehman, piano; Eriko Sato, violin; Lois Martin, viola; and Chris Finckel, cello, for an afternoon of wonderful music. Concert time is 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 and $12 senior citizen (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra student with ID. Tickets on sale beginning February 7.

Sunday, April 22
Hofstra Jazz Ensemble
Directed by David Lalama
Location: The Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, California Avenue, South Campus
An evening of traditional and contemporary jazz compositions and arrangements for Big Band and Little Big Band.
Tickets are $6, $5 senior citizen (over 65) and non-Hofstra student with ID. Concert time is 7 p.m. Tickets on sale beginning March 27.

Friday, April 27
Hofstra Chorale and Chamber Singers
Directed by David Fryling
Location: Cathedral of the Incarnation, 50 Cathedral Avenue, Garden City, New York
An eclectic selection of choral music presented in an exquisite acoustic space. Concert time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $10, $8 senior citizen (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra student with ID. For tickets and information, please call 516-463–5497.

Saturday, May 5
Hofstra Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band
Directed by Peter Loel Boonshaft
Location: John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus
A program of traditional and contemporary works for wind band. Concert time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 and $8 senior citizen (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra student with ID. Tickets on sale beginning April 10.

Tuesday, May 8
Hofstra University Choir and Hofstra String Orchestra
Directed by Cindy Bell and David Ramael
Location: John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus
Concert time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 and $8 senior citizen (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra student with ID. Tickets on sale beginning April 17.

Saturday, May 12
Hofstra Symphony Orchestra Goes to The Museum
Directed by David Ramael
Location: John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus
The Hofstra Symphony Orchestra will perform Peter Maxwell Davies’ Five Klee Pictures and Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Alina Kiryayeva will be the featured soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 24 in C minor, K. 491. There will be a pre-concert lecture at 7:15 p.m., with the concert following at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 and $8 senior citizen (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra student with ID. Tickets on sale beginning April 17.
