The Cradle of Climate Change

Hofstra University Center for Climate Study unveils exhibit on climate change at the Cradle of Aviation Museum

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Hofstra University’s Center for Climate Study (HUCCS), in partnership with the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, has unveiled the first phase of an exhibit on climate change funded by a grant from the Department of Energy.

The exhibit features ongoing research by a team of Hofstra professors including Dr. Myla Aronson and Dr. Russell Burke from the biology department, Dr. J Bret Bennington and Dr. E. Christa Farmer from the geology department and Dr. David Weissman from engineering. The multi-disciplinary Hofstra University Center for Climate Study (HUCCS) was launched last year with a $500,000 federal grant that includes funding for students to assist professors with their research.

The Hofstra researchers are trying to answer several questions: What will the likely effects of future global climate change be on Long Island ecosystems, such as the Pine Barrens? Can Long Island sediment cores be used to reconstruct a record of the impact of past hurricanes? How can better estimates of air-sea transfer of carbon dioxide be made using cloud-penetrating radar?

The exhibit features graphic panels and video loops highlighting some of the fundamentals of planet Earth’s climate system as well as overviews of the ongoing research. Future plans include several interactive components to be installed over the coming few years. The final design and production of the exhibit was done by Blumlein Associates, Inc., of Mineola, in conjunction with HUCCS and the Cradle of Aviation Museum.
