African Union Committee
The African Union (AU) has a vision to create "an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in global arena." While the AU does not have the power of the United Nations Security Council, the body has played an important role in the social, economic, and political development of the continent of Africa and its fifty-four member states. Moreover, it works closely with the United Nations to address common concerns.
At the 2017 Hofstra Model United Nations Conference, delegates to the African Union committee will operate as a United Nations General Assembly Committee and will debate two important topics. First, delegates will debate and attempt to resolve issues that relate to instability and problems of governance in the Federal Republic of Somalia, a long standing-problem that also affects surrounding countries such as Kenya and Ethiopia. The second issue before the committee is gender and sexual-based violence in armed conflict, a problem that has long plagued parts of Africa.
