Among the most popular of the nineteenth century readers, McGuffey’s Eclectic Readers incorporated a cumulation of the methods and approaches which had been developed during the nineteenth century. In the preface to his 1881 edition McGuffey boasted that “The plan of the book enables the teacher to pursue the Phonic Method, the Word Method, the Alphabet Method, or any combination of these methods. By the beginning of the twentieth century, further revisions to the readers allowed McGuffey to claim that they embodied and illustrated "the best features of the word, the phonic, and the sentence or thought methods."
