Parents

Quick Tip

At Student Financial Services (SFS), we work very hard to help families maximize their financial aid options and provide clear guidance to help minimize the stress.  In fact, our SFS Counselors are available to you and your child at anytime to provide guidance, support and advice.

While we encourage you to read through this web site for full information, we've pulled out a few key points that parents really need to know.

WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FINANCIAL AID

  • Financial Aid:  Most of the information that you will need to apply for financial aid can be accessed through the main financial aid page on this web site by clicking on the link that best describes your child's situation.
  • Bridging the Gap: If after applying for financial aid and receiving your family's award package you feel that you still don't have the resources to meet the costs of tuition and housing, you still have other options. To learn more, click on the links below, and don't forget – if you have questions, need help or advice, give us a call at 516-463-8000 or contact an SFS Counselor:

WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PAYING YOUR ACCOUNT (BURSAR)

  • Authorization to Pay Your Child's Account: Your child can designate parents as "authorized users" of their student account. This will allow parents to pay bills and receive student account updates directly. For step-by-step instructions, please see www.hofstra.edu/sfshowto.
  • Have your Parent Plus loan directly credited to your child's student account. Many parents find it helpful to have Parent Plus loans credit student accounts directly. To choose this option, you'll need to fill out a Title IV Authorization Form available at www.hofstra.edu/sfsforms

WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS AND HOW THEY AFFECT FINANCIAL AID AND ENROLLMENT

Undergraduate Student Requirements

Renewal of Financial Aid is tied meeting certain academic criteria. Make sure you and your child understand what is expected in terms of grade point average (GPA) and number of credits. | MORE INFO |

Gaining access to your child's academic records (FERPA)

Your rights to view your child's academic records are limited under federal law unless your child waives this right to privacy by completing a "FERPA" form.

Upon enrollment, your child is given a secure web-based portal that provides access to information about his or her financial aid packages, sar/ student account, and class registration. While your child has access to this information available at all times, you may not. The reason is that Hofstra University, like all colleges in the United States, must comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) - a federal law that requires colleges and universities to protect the confidentiality of student and education records.

What this means is that at the post-secondary level, parents have no inherent rights to inspect a student’s education record. However, this right can be granted by the student through their portal if they complete a FERPA form. For step-by-step instructions, visit www.hofstra.edu/sfshowto.

We urge you to discuss FERPA with your child. Open communication is the best way to ensure your child has a positive experience at Hofstra and that his or her account is kept current.
