About the Sexual Assault Nurse Advanced Certificate Program
Using an innovative and holistic trauma informed curriculum the goal of this program is to train nurses to conduct sexual assault forensic examinations which can provide better physical and mental health care for survivors, better evidence collection, and higher prosecution rates. The program’s primary mission is to train compassionate, culturally sensitive registered nurse and to provide comprehensive trauma informed care, timely forensic evidence collection, coordination of follow-up care as well as expert testimony. Registered nurses will be exposed to didactic and clinical experiences, emphasizing the needs of underserved, rural and diverse populations. Clinical experiences in a wide variety of interdisciplinary settings (e.g., ambulatory ob–gyn practices, emergency departments, labor and delivery, school health, and psychiatry practices) will be coordinated. The program entails a course of study that includes 50 hours of didactic coursework, 50 hours of clinical skills sessions that include standardized pelvic examination patients, colposcopy training and a clinical skills immersion experience with expert sexual assault nurse and legal professionals. The program culminates with a 200 hour preceptor and self-directed practicum. Upon completion, assistance with securing employment within a setting that conducts forensic examination will be facilitated.

Admission Criteria
  1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited institution
    • GPA 3.0
  2. An unencumbered NYS RN license
  3. Clinical nursing experience- a minimum of 1 year
    • Preference to ED, Women'’'s Health, Pediatrics, Geriatrics
  4. Prerequisite: NYS Child Abuse/Infection Control
  5. Current Resume
  6. Letters of Recommendation: ED or Service Line, Nurse Manager
  7. Essay: Each applicant is required to submit a 1000 word essay discussing your interest in becoming a SANE with this application.
