Program Description

Hofstra in China Program
May 16-June 14, 2016

The 2016 Hofstra in China Program is based in Shanghai, the most well-known metropolitan city in China, where brilliant neon lights, stylish skyscrapers, and private gardens of the imperial period best project today’s Chinese identity: a country both ancient and modern. The program takes place at East China Normal University, which boasts the most beautiful campus in Shanghai.  While selectively taking courses in Chinese culture, literature and language, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of cultural excursions. In Shanghai students visit major tourist spots in the city and make two weekend excursions to nearby scenic spots, Hangzhou and Suzhong, generally known as “the paradises on the earth” in Chinese society. A two-and-a-half-day visit to Beijing constitutes a final highlight of the program, where numerous historical relics illustrate the knowledge learned in class.  Tourist excursions cover the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Yu Garden, the West Lake, the Garden of Humble Administrator, and many others.  Extracurricular activities include Beijing Opera appreciation, Chinese acrobatics, a Gongfu performance and museum visits.  Both Hofstra and non-Hofstra students are welcome to apply.

Five Compelling Reasons to Visit China:

  • To yourself with a rising power in the East so as to re-orient your career direction.
  • To witness the amazing changes taking place in China.
  • To acquire one of the most useful languages in the world.
  • To experience the mystical oriental culture at its fountainhead.
  • To enjoy the spectacular beauty of China, both ancient and modern.
