Physical Plant Management

The Physical Plant group supports system requirements including heating, air conditioning, lighting, electric, plumbing and fire safety equipment. In addition, skilled trade groups maintain the paint, locks, carpentry and masonry, vehicles and energy management processes.     COGENERATION POWER PLANT
    Hofstra constructed a 2.3 megawatt cogeneration facility in 1990 to generate electricity for use throughout the campus. Today the facility continues to produce about 25% of the total electrical demand on campus. The CO-GEN Plant produces electric, steam and hot water simultaneously, which provides an efficient and lower cost method of providing electricity to the campus.

    POWER USAGE
    The campus uses roughly 60,000,000 kilowatt hours per year of electricity. That is enough electricity to supply power to 7500 average residential homes for a year.

    FUEL USAGE
    The campus has over 60 boilers, over 80 hot water heaters and hundreds of roof top heating units. The total heating capacity of the campus is capable of conservatively supplying heat and hot water to over 2,000 average sized residential homes.

    BACK UP SUPPORT
    Support generators are maintained at 15 locations for emergency lighting and for emergency power needs as required.

    EMERGENCY GENERATORS
